At the end of February at ChNPP site, the main crane system (MCS) of the new safe confinement (NSC) was tested after its modification.
MCS consists of two bridges that can move independently and three trolleys (standard, safe and equipped with a mobile instrumentation platform). Trolleys can move between the bridges due to maintenance garages and are remotely controlled from the process building. This system will become a key tool for handling in the space under the NSC arch, in particular, during dismantling of unstable structures.
During MCS acceptance tests, the problem points of MCS bridge functioning were identified and MCS was modified to remove them. The main purpose of the tests after modification is to confirm MCS functioning in compliance with the design requirements.
Experts from the Management Group of the Shelter Implementation Project, Chernobyl NPP, NOVARKA Company, and the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine participated in the tests. Leading engineer of the Laboratory on Nuclear Facilities Decommissioning and Nuclear Material Management of the Decommissioning Department Mykola Sapon took part in the tests from the State Scientific and Technical Center for Nuclear and Radiation Safety.
During the tests, movement of the bridges at the maximum velocity with an emergency stopping, velocity of bridge transfer and engine torque moments, non-exceeding of permissible bridge deformation, bridge restoration functions in case of their failure and synchronous bridge transfer were inspected.
“The tests of NSC MCS after modification showed in general positive impact of the modification in the context of solving the previous problem points of NSC operation. However, speaking about completely positive results will be possible only after consideration of the comments made during the tests”, Mykola Sapon said.
