Representatives of the German Society for Reactor Safety (GRS) visited Ukraine. They took part in a number of meetings and workshops on common bilateral projects with the State Scientific and Technical Center for Nuclear and Radiation Safety (SSTC NRS), discussed topical issues of bilateral cooperation and signed the Work Program of Cooperation between SSTC NRS and GRS for 2019.
The tasks of the partners for this year are, in particular, calculations to implement the severe accident management strategy for the reactor core and spent fuel pool for VVER-1000 and VVER-440; comprehensive analysis of accidents at VVER units; LOCA and SBO calculations for Rivne NPP unit 1 (VVER-440) using combined ATHLET-COCOSYS codes.
The parties also continue cooperation in determining radioactive material characteristics, in particular, GRS and SSTC NRS agreed to develop a joint GRS - SSTC NRS document focusing on sensitivity analysis of safe management of radioactive waste considering radionuclide content in it. The participants discussed further development of the joint report upon results of this effort and its presentation at the annual ETSON Award Contest for Young Scientists, which will be held under the EUROSAFE Forum 2019 on 4-5 November 2019 in Cologne (Germany).
The signed Work Program also included the safe operation of the Shelter inside the New Safe Confinement of the destroyed unit 4 at Chornobyl NPP; experience feedback on the development and use of the Knowledge Portal; emergency response and preparedness, etc.
In addition, representatives discussed future cooperation areas between the organizations during the working meetings, namely: model development to assess VVER-440 criticality during severe accidents; analysis of fire spreading at VVER-1000 NPPs using COCOSYS calculations and development of a simplified analytical simulator for VVER-440 using ATLAS code. The parties also agreed on the joint participation in the cooperation projects of the European Commission (EC) for Ukraine and in the tenders held by the EC in the field of nuclear and radiation safety to support the regulatory authorities of other countries and their TSOs.
