The official lecture courses of the International Summer Nuclear School II “Design and Operation of VVER-type reactors. General aspects and Certain Questions” started on 3 July 2019. The event was organized by the State Scientific and Technical Center for Nuclear and Radiation Safety under the sponsorship of European Nuclear Safety Training and Tutoring Institute (ENSTTI), Ankara University Institute of Nuclear Sciences, Energoatom and Odessa National Polytechnic University. The participants of the International Summer Nuclear School were students from eleven higher educational institutions of Turkey educated in the sphere of nuclear energy. The project envisages a visit to Chornobyl Exclusion zone (undertaken), number of lectures and visit to RNPP site.
On the first day of training, the experts and speakers from SSTC NRS, Energoatom and Odessa National Polytechnic University determined main principles of nuclear facility operation, qualification upgrade and training possibilities in Ukraine, regulatory support of NPP construction and operation and energy generating company functions. Reactor physics was considered, VVER-type reactors and history of their development were reviewed and also main principles of VVER –1000/1200 reactor protection systems, in particular systems protecting form external hazards, were presented.
Aliona Prokofyeva, ENSTTI representative, participated in the opening of the lecture course. In her speech the expert highlighted a set of projects implemented jointly with the SSTC NRS. Speaking on the perspective she mentioned that International Summer Nuclear School should continue its activity and more over should extend the format and regularity.
“Ukrainian scientific and technical basis is unique – it has both ChNPP and operable power units with extended life-time. I want to point out the high preparation level of the project. I see interest and motivation of students. The International Summer Nuclear School should develop its basis and move to a new level with involvement of other participants from partner countries which operate VVER-type units, – mentioned Mrs. Prokofyeva. – Currently we actively conduct negotiations with European Commission interested in the Project, we have many plans on extension of topics and scope since our organization receives considerable number of training requests”.
In general, the International Summer Nuclear School II training shall last until Friday, 5 July, after which the participants shall pass final exams in the form of test to demonstrate knowledge of the data. This weekend they can solidify obtained knowledge on operation of VVER-type reactors in the course of visit to RNPP.
