The International Summer Nuclear School II “Design and Operation of VVER-type reactors. General aspects and Certain Questions” started its work on the basis of the State Scientific and Technical Center for Nuclear and Radiation Safety. This year participants were students from eleven higher educational institutions of Turkey.
On 2 July, the Summer Nuclear School participants visited the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone where they could find answers on multiple questions since the data on the worst man-induced nuclear disaster was incomplete for a long time and sometimes misinterpreted and incorrect. TV serial produced by HBO American Channel rose vast interest to Chornobyl. That is why it was important for the future experts in the field of nuclear energy to see themselves the consequences of ChNPP accident and obtain current information from the experts.
While visiting the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone, the visitor acquainted with the most popular locations – Duga Radar, unfinished ChNPP Units 5 and 6, New Safe Confinement. They also studied the model of Unit 4 damage consequences and its current state with the help of the mockup model arranged in ChNPP Information Center. Here, the students of International Summer Nuclear School obtained the data on perspectives of exclusion zones – what is the future destiny of damaged unit and is there a possibility of human activity recovery.
“It was not just a simple information visit the idea was much more deep: to give future experts of nuclear sector the possibility to understand the importance of compliance with the regulatory requirements for nuclear and radiation safety, - mentioned Dmytro Gumenyuk, Head of NPP Safety Analysis Department. – Summer Nuclear School participants were interested in the issues that relate to accident causes and accident elimination activity. Also, they were surprised about the number of population evacuated because of the accident. However, the most strong emotions are brought out of what was seen in Ghost-Town Pripyat in which you cannot believe that you walk down the central street and that there are residential buildings on the right and on the left from you or that you stand in the middle of the football field at the stadium. This town is a monument to human being negligence and mistake price. We hope that this visit shall make the students to think over the importance of chosen profession, the necessity of training and that they always shall be guided with the principle “Safety is above all” in their future work.
