The project on the commissioning of the New Safe Confinement (NSC) above the destroyed Unit 4 of the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant (ChNPP) is at the final stage. Vitalii Petruk, Head of the State Agency of Ukraine for Exclusion Zone Management (SAUEZM), noted in the public report for 2018 that the works are 96 % completed.
From 28 January to 1 February, within international project of the European Commission “Training and Tutoring for Experts of Regulatory Bodies and Their Technical Support Organizations for Development or Enhancement of Regulatory and Technical Capabilities” the training of the European Nuclear Safety Training and Tutoring Institute (ENSTTI) “Supervision of Safety Culture and Management System” was conducted in the SSTC NRS.
On Wednesday, 6 February, an extended meeting of the Scientific and Technical Council was held in the State Scientific and Technical Center for Nuclear and Radiation Safety, during which the results of the analysis of documents within conceptual solution “Implementation of Risk-Informed NPP Configuration Management for Safety Improvement and Maintenance Optimization of Systems Important to Safety” were considered.
Oleksii Shugailo, Head of NPP Long-Term Operation Department of the State Scientific and Technical Center for Nuclear and Radiation Safety, participated in IAEA expert mission on “Regulatory Analysis and Assessment of Documents Justifying Recovery Annealing (Program, Justification, etc.)”, which was held on 21-23 January in the office of the Armenian National Regulatory Authority with the participation of Metsamor NPP experts (Armenia).
A working meeting of SSTC NRS and ÚJV Řež representatives was held in ÚJV Řež office (Husinec, Czech Republic) of 15-17 January. The objective of this meeting was to discuss the state of experimental research aimed at VVER-1000 in-vessel melt retention.

The regional workshop on radioactive waste primary characterization took place on 19-23 November in Visaginas (Lithuania) at Ignalina NPP (INPP) site in the framework of implementation of IAEA project RER/9150 “Improving Capabilities to Efficiently Implement Large Ongoing Decommissioning Projects and Waste Management with Minimization of Risks Based on Initiatives and Potential Synergies”.
The working meeting of the users of АС2 codes (ATHLET, ATHLET-CD, COCOSYS) took place at the end of November in Garching (Germany). Among the participants there were experts from the specialized institutions of Germany, Czech Republic, France, China, Lithuania, Russia and Ukraine. The State Scientific and Technical Center for Nuclear and Radiation Safety was represented by Maksym Vyshemirskyi, Junior Researcher of NPP Thermohydraulic and Probabilistic Safety Analysis Department.
The 14th International Scientific and Technical Conference of Young Scientists and Specialists “Problems of Modern Nuclear Energy”, dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the Ukrainian Nuclear Society, was held in November on premises of V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University.
Last month, a meeting of the Council of Energoatom Experts in the area of emergency documents was held at KhNPP site. During this meeting, the ways of solving urgent issues on the guidelines and instructions for severe accident management at NPP were considered. Representatives of SNRIU and State Scientific and Technical Center for Nuclear and Radiation Safety were invited to give consultations and explanations.
In the celebration of the centenary of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine awarded team of the State Scientific and Technical Center for Nuclear and Radiation Safety with the Jubilee Honorary Certificate for achievements in solving the most important scientific and technical issues, implementing innovations in the national economy, practice of social and cultural development, training and education of personnel, active involvement in public life, and dedicated selfless work.
